Interesting Aftermarket Warranty info for CA residents.

So after a few companies called me today trying to sell me a warranty,a guy from a CA based Warranty Brokerage called me.
He was not trying to sell me a warranty,but just wanted to inform me,that if i buy a warranty from let's say Fidelis or Choice,that it will not be accepted by the place of repair.He is saying that 2 years ago there was a legislation passed by the Governor,that the only way you can buy an aftermarket warranty is trough your BMW dealer,otherwise it would not be accepted.
This was due to the fact that the dealerships were being under cut by smaller after market warranty's and they were not making any money.So he told me the he can not sell me a warranty nor can some other 3rd part warranty institution.
Anyone know about this?
Anyone here in Cali,who has purchased an aftermarket warranty from out of state or other then the dealer?

Hmmm...I would call a bit of BS. Why, because when I lived in CA, I purchased aftermarket extended warranties for both my E46 M3s (1 Vert I sold with the said warranty transfered) with Mercury Insurance and my SA at Sterling BMW in Newport Beach, CA accepted & actually loved dealing with them.

What he said was,that if bought trough a dealer then its ok,but if you would call Didelity now for example it's not valid....

Is there any truth to this??

I call BS as well. Almost all dealers (BMW) included sell aftermarket (third party) warranties. So why would they sell them? So can deny coverage when you bring in your car for repairs? I don't think so. Makes no sense. Maybe you should ask the person to send you documentation supporting his claims.

Ok i said that if bought trough a dealer its a valid warranty!
But if you would go online right now,google aftermarket warranty,go to their websight,request a quote,when they call back and sell you the warranty it would be considered not VALID due to the fact that there is a Law that was passed by the Governator,that only dealerships can sell you the warranties and you can not directly buy them trough the Broker,internet etc.
It was passed as a law by state of CA so that the dealers can make money.

They apperently got a legislation passed by the Governor(paid him a lt f money probably)

You can always call a used car dealer or a broker and ask them. You can even call a dealer and ask. I've not come accross this issue yet. I see a few companies advertising their warranties but most people who buy aftermarket warranties don't bring them into the dealerships for repair. Those that do, usually buy the warranty from the dealership directly through the f&i department.

Well I bought my extended aftermarket warranty from Mercury directly & NOT through BMW. So I have no idea...maybe like a grandfather clause on cars that already have aftermarket extended warranties not bought through BMW & now you no longer can do that?

I know you did....I LIVED in CA from '06 till this past April '09! I bought the Mercury Insurance Extended Warranty policies when I was living in CA and used the warranty at STERLING BMW in Newport Beach, CA. Call Chris Zappia (949-645-5900, his cell phone: 949-375-3529), my old SA there & he will tell you he loves dealing with Mercury Insurance!
