Very Strange Problem in Manual Mode

When i shift my car into S mode and start shifting manually, my entire leather boot will pop out (only when i up shift--pull the lever back). Is there an easy fix for this? is it possible that the leather shrunk over time?

Weasel will become famous soon enough
When that happned in my old eclipse w/manual tranny, I refused to spend any money on that piece of shit and made my own shift boot out of a crown royal bag. That got better reviews from the friends than if I had a spankin new napa leather boot with tri-color stitching!

But is the whole thing popping up (leather with plastic ring) or just the leather coming out of the ring?

Speaking from 1st hand experience also, with exactly the same prob. I found that the surround plastic trim under the leather had broken.
I posted same subject some time ago here: Broken Gear Lever Shroud Base.

The supa glue repair has not lasted however. weasel's option sounds good although my problem remains with the plastic base/surround. Have learnt to live with this shitty little problem for the moment, probably saving some fuel by not thumping it in manual.

Gear lever top piece (in leather) is fairly tight on the shaft, it will come off with a good steady pull and simply clicks straight back on, just don't give yourself a black eye in the process

Had the same problem on mine after the dealer replace the wood trim around the shifter under warranty. They put a new boot piece on and it did would pop off every time I shifted too. Put a third one on and it's been fine. My guess is that the leather is stitched too tightly to save $.05 on an extra 1/16" of material.

Maybe, but I reckon it's the shitty plastic that BMW uses on some (maybe all) of the interior trimmings.
What about how many guys have had air con fascia buttons break and other sundry plastic bits fail on them ??
