I'm guessing he meant the place to extinguish a smoke? I don't think an ashtry is an appropriate place for a penholder :-)

Ha, thats what the previous owner used it for, never for extinguishing a cigarette...smoke free.
I don't quite understand why there are ashtrays in the back too, I mean, who smokes in cars, better yet, in cars with the windows up??

Perhaps they may smoke more in Europe than in the US; thus the multiple ashtrays and multiple lighters!

Some photos would be great and if the piece has a part number. I've never heard of it on an X5.

Thanks for the pics. Just an FYI, that's not actually a pen holder, it's a cigarette butt extinguisher. When you mentioned it, I had thought it was something similar to the one that an aftermarket company (TEC) made for the 3 series.
