So get a code reader first...so you can pull the codes etc.
No one is gonna be able to say what's going on with your X just by knowing that your SES light is on,there are different interpretations for some specific codes.
Get a scanner,it's the first step to delay the visit to the dealer.

Before you do anything make sure the fuel cap is on properly, and tight. It can cause the check engine soon light to come on.

I had this a few months ago and the code reader says O2 sensor. It was NOT the problem. I have an 03 3.0 and the problem was the rubber boot/elbow from the intake had many cracks and holes. Its the elbow that goes into the engine block. The part was $16 but it was a pain to get at. After replacing it and reseting the computer the code never came back.

Description of boot:
90 degress with 2 other inputs.
Approx 4" diameter
Rubber

I was told that the reason the O2 sensor code came up is the air fuel mixture will be off since there is a leak in the intake.

Good luck.

Mine threw up O2 sensor codes, but the GT1 did not scan anything O2 related.

So have you done the scanning on your x55 yet? Make sure to come back and post results.

This appears to be the most common reason for the check engine light to come on. Don't expect it go away immediately after ensuring the fuel cap is on tight though -- you might need to drive a bit.

I just picked mine up from BMW service today...in part because my "check engine soon" light was on. The OBD indicated "misfire faults in warmup phase" which prompted them to test the fuel and found 15% alcohol (max recommended is 10%).
Well, I go to BP every fillup and always use premium. The service guy said that there are a lot of bad fuels out there and that BP was one of the culprits...they directed me to a website Top Tier Gasoline. It gives a big story about fuel additives and detergents, etc. I'm going to try switching to Shell or Phillips 66 and see if I notice a difference. That website lists several gas stations that they have deemed worthy...Texaco, etc. is on there but no BP.
