'03 4.4 M62TU VANOS solenoid and upper timing chain cover??
I plan on replace the solenoids' seals also. Hate to have to remove them if not needed. I plan on replacing the following items this weekend: upper timing chain covers, VANOS seals, valve cover gaskets, intake/throttle gaskets and back over, all heating hoses, OS and vacuum hoses, and the valley pan gasket. 93K mile service. It runs great; just some oil leaks around the covers/seals and the valley pan coolant leak. This will be my first DIY on these items on the X5...should be exciting. Wife said she has the number to the car rental place...just in case

Not really... and unforthnately it takes a special extra thin walled extra deep 32mm socket to get the solenoid out. (BMW special tool)
I have seen a few people sneak the solenoid with the 32mm fan wrench by pulling the upper timing cover partially out (about as far as it can go) then slipping the wrench in at an angle behind the cover and catching the hex at the base of the solenoids. So if you don't want to but the special tool from the dealer you can give that a try with your fan clutch wrench.
