I have seen several people asking about replacing the hoses on the rear of the engine. Got code P0443 a couple of weeks ago and after reading some articles on here, I checked the hoses on the rear of the engine and found them soft and collapsed. After checking articles on here about replacing them, some people gave very bad advice; that the hoses were coolant hoses, that you needed to buy the BMW hoses, and that the price runs $400-$1000. These two hoses on the rear of the engine are actually crankcase ventilation hoses. I used 5/8 heater hose from the local auto store for $8 and made the fix in about 1 hour. Some others on here have given good directions and really helped me, so here goes my attempt at explaining the replacement. Take the engine cover off the engine with the 4 5mm quick connect screws (half turn). Next you have to remove the fresh air box behind and above the engine. Remove the rubber weather strip by just pulling it off. Remove the top of the air box with the twist locks. Its a little tricky but it comes out easily. After you get the top off, you can remove a small section on each end of the air box (~6"). They simply lift up and out. Now remove the 2 13mm nuts on the front of the air box (one is next to the negative battery cable) and the other is on the opposite side. After the 2 nuts are removed, the entire air box will lift right out. Now you can get to the hoses with some effort. Use some type of platform in front of the vehicle to allow you to reach down behind the engine. The upper connection is easy to get to and has those throw away clamps. Use a screwdriver and pry them off, but don't get too rough, you could damage the tube. Make sure you note where each hose goes. The other end is a little more trouble. The other end of the hoses has a worm screw clamp on them. Use a long screwdriver and loosen the top one. Its hard to get off and I had to cut it off after I got the clamp off. It had melted to the fitting. Now comes the lower hose, use a 6mm or 1/4" deep socket on a 1/4" rachet. It's hard to get to, but with some time and effort you can loosen the clamp and get the hose off. (it also helps to let the BMW engineer know that he was illegitmate) The 5/8" heater hose works fine except for that lower connection which is so hard to get to. It appears to be a little larger so I had to pre-stretch the hose with the handle of a screwdriver and grease it, to get it on. Parts needed: 3' of 5/8" heater hose, clamps, grease and some patience... good luck
