New water pump turns out to be not so new

I wanted to get everyone's opinion here about something that has been bothering me a bit. Last year my water pump went out while driving, nearly overheated, had the pump replaced at the dealer. After several months had gone by, I was organizing my car invoices and noticed that on that particular invoice the parts list had a line that says "RMFD PUMP". It seems that they slipped in a remanufactured pump! They never gave me a choice of installing a new one. My vehicle wasn't under warranty so I don't see what they would have to gain by doing that.

Anyway... this is something that has been bugging me for a while and I'm wondering whether I should bring it up with them next time I bring my car in. After paying all that money for what I thought was a new pump... now I may be stuck in the same situation of having to replace it again sooner than expected. What are your opinions on this?

If its remanufactured Im sure its the same idea as when you but a new car battery or alternator, they are all remanufactured from the inside but use the old casing. Doesn't sound like too big of a deal, but they should've asked if thats what you wanted instead of just taking it upon themselves to decide for you. I dont really know the protocol on remanufactured water pumps, however.

They should've asked, but you can't do anything about it now so it doesn't matter.

If a new pump was available, it would have cost much more than a reman pump. There is no difference in the life expectancy of a reman pump vs a new pump. The dealer did you a favour.

All depends on how much they charged you for the part. Other than that, it doesn't matter.

They charged me $189 for the remanufactured pump... anyone know what a new one goes for? I have a good relationship with the dealer here, but this just seemed odd to me. I guess they were trying to keep the overall cost low because there was a lot of work done on that invoice.

Same thing just happened to me... is it because they have the new metal propelers?

No, you are better off with a reman pump as there is no advantage to spending more for a new pump. The part numbers have been changed up as the impellors were changed.

BMW does not sell new water pumps. They are all reman. Only cars that are built at the factory come with new parts. Reman waterpump parts carry lifetime warranty. You simply can not buy a new water pump from the dealer.

...now I know, can't help to think is very strange, but at least I am at peace. Got only two years warranty though. Only $120 for the part.
