When to Change Expansion Tank?
Hello,
My X5 has 91K miles, and I am trying to get things done before they break. For example, I am replacing the original water pump as we speak, it works fine but being the original, I decided to do it. The question is about the EXPANSION tank. The one on my 328i cracked at 100K, is it because it was old enough? or some other reason? It was pretty hot that day, and I just had taken the car out of a shop for service on one of the rear bearings. Since then I have been using the stealership for peace of mind. BTW, that time, the expansion tank had a huge crack, I mean the entire coolant went in a matter of one or two minutes, rather weird. Should I replace it now? Also, what else is there? I am trying to take care of things that, potentially, could leave me stranded, so for the thermostat (for example) I will wait until it starts giving me weird readings. I appreciate the expertise!

If you really want to be preventative, change the entire cooling system. The plastic hose connectors on the radiator will fail much the same way the expansion tank will, hoses will start cracking and so on. The plastic parts of the cooling system seem to crack and fail anytime afer 60k.
Do you have a V8? I had my valley pan gasket changed the same time as the water pump.

If you are very lucky you may get away with this attitude. After my experience in the E39 - where a split coolant pipe sprayed boiling water over the headlamp and caused a 'check headlamp' warning to obscure the 'check coolant' warning - I grew out of this 'if it aint broke' attitude. By the time I noticed it I had been running on red for about 10 minutes. Luckily I got away without a new headgasket (or two - it was a V8).  I'm doing a similar exercise - starting with the tranny oil soon. No comments needed thanx - did hours of reading and chatting with BMW service about this  Honestly mate - never heard of 'preventative maintenance' ????  ??? I changed all the cooling system hoses and tanks by myself WHEN THEY ALL STARTED FALLING APART, not before. It really isnt that hard.....
No need to get all gung ho on the cooling system until it starts leaking, which it will 100% guarantee.!
