X5 TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE

I have a 2002 3.0i petrol X5 (MANUAL) 45000 miles which has suffered a catostrophic engine failure.

School run after cold night , 20mph, no warnings/symptoms, sudden billowing white smoke from rear and 'burning smell.
Main dealer says engine completely goosed - spark plugs removed and unable to do full revolution manually.

Other X5 websites suggest possible 'oil separator' failure. Bmw says does not exist on petrol version.

Offered Bmw re con engine for £7k fitted, after which car worth £8k trade in!

Any thoughts please - gutted!!

sorry to hear. I had the smoke coming out too. guess i caught it on time. change the oil separator and valve cover gasket. I took my time and did it myself.

anyway you can ask another mechanic about it?

Didn't find this site from you, little amacman. I'm so glad you post answers for others' benefit, and not to (try) and show how very clever you are. What a charming chap.
Edited to say - 'WOW! 700+ posts?! Man - get out more!!'

Yii - I'm talking about A LOT of white smoke. All of a sudden. Enough to obscure the whole road for several yards. Maybe different from what you're seeing - hopefully!

why do you edit to change your statement .
why are you having such a dig at me .
does your dealer appear to show how clever they are .
you appear to have some issues , get over it already .
if you don`t like the answers then maybe you should consider not asking dumb questions .
you got perfectly good answers on the other forum and yet you show contempt for people who are trying to help .
