New X5 Owner with a question

Greetings all,
Purchased a 2002 X5 4.4i last weekend and my fiancee and I are lovin' it. X5 is in excellent condition with only 1 owner that babied it.
Of course I had to find a BMW forum and so here we are.
Now the question - What would cause the CD player to stop working? We loaded the CDs and it was playing them. Next day, went to play and the display shows NO DISC. I've taken the CDs out, reloaded them but still says NO DISC. Are we overlooking something that needs to be done?

Are they burned discs, mp3 files?

Regular store bought CDs in the player now. I do have burned CDs - are there issues using them?

Standard CDs should not be a problem. Burned discs can sometimes present a problem - just depends on the quality of the disc. Certain models will not read mp3 files.

You may want to check the CD player unit to ensure its is set for he correct mounting position (vertical or horizontal). If it is, chances are the laser is out of alignment in which case you'll probably want to just replace the unit.

One thing I noticed when the CDs played was that after installing the CD cartridge, the player was scanning from bottom to top and what looked like a laser (it was red) was lit as it scanned, when it was done it went back down to the bottom (ie CD #1)
I tried it again this morning and this time I didn't see the laser and when it was done scanning, it stayed at the top.

BTW, how do I check that the CD player unit is set for the correct mounting position (vertical or horizontal) other than visually looking at it? Is there is switch? Visually looking at it, the CDs are installed horizontally.

First off, congratulations on your new purchase!!! Amazing cars aren't they! Try unplugging the two connectors in the back of the unit, then plug them back in. I have heard that sometimes they get loose over time. Good luck.

Maybe but for now, it's working Yesterday I took the unit out to get the model # right from the changer - when I re-installed it, it found all the CDs and is working!! BTW, the "out the door" sound quality in a BMW is pretty impressive.

Hey that used to happen to me, what I did is keep removing the cartridge and reinserting the cd holder cartridge, I notice that humidity would sometimes cause that...., remove the cds, clean them, put them back in the cartridge, and insert the cartridge back in!

no worries, it should work after that...

Glad that worked for you. Do you have an upgraded speaker system? Mine is the standard 10 speaker system. Sounds great on accustic music and talk radio, but my wife listens to the newer popular music, sounds terrible!!!! Is yours the same way?
