Is this for real?
![]() Clean your engine on the inside! Over time, your engine develops residue on the piston rings, gunk on the tips of the fuel injectors and deposits on the back of the valves. (We've seen lots of "dealer maintained" engines that were loaded with nasty build-up.) The result of all this is a gradual reduction in power, response and economy. Our engine renewal kit removes the build-up and allows your engine to perform at its best. The kit includes one container of Lubro Moly Engine Flush, one container of Lubro Moly Motor Protect, a 6-pack of Lubro Moly Jectron and a 6-pack of Lubro Moly Ventil Sauber. Using it doesn't involve anything more complicated than an oil change. Just add the Engine Flush to your engine oil, run the engine for 10 minutes then drain the oil (and the sludge!). Mix the Motor Protect with the fresh engine oil to reduce wear, improve fuel economy and lower exhaust pollutants. Then add one can of Jectron to your fuel tank the next time you fill up. The following fill-up, add a can of Ventil Sauber. Then alternate bewteen the two on a monthly basis, adding one can of Jectron in the second month, a can of Verntil sauber in the third month, etc. We recommend this as an annual program for any engine with 60,000 or more miles on it. Plus it's a great way to bring that just-purchased BMW or MINI back to baseline. If purchased separately, the items in this kit would cost $102. Part Number Description Price Qty. LMERK Lubro Moly Engine Renewal Kit $94.95 |

Gee, I thought most higher end gasolines had detergents and additives in them to do virtually the same thing this stuff claims to do..........sounds like snake oil.

I've never used the products or anything like that. But at close to 100K miles on the 4.4 engine, it still looks spotless on the inside--no sludge, and the injectors (original) are still in bright shiny condition. It still runs like new.
I think the BMW lub filtration system coupled with synthetic oil is very efficient. I also think any good quality gas has sufficient detergent to keep injectors clean. |

I am a fan of high quality gasoline, with Techron or a similar detergent. Also, SL/SM rated engine oils with detergents. That is usually all you need.
If you don't use good fuel, or have a sludge problem (a build-up of solids in the oil) then an additive makes sense to clean the engine out. It is always better to keep it clean, but if the engine is dirty then cleaning it can help. The problem with using additives regularly is that they can contain harsh ingredients that damage seals, O-rings, etc. If you are going to use additives, detergents are generally easier on the engine internals than solvents. The products noted above are solvent-based, and include ingredients like benzene and naptha (which are usually found in lighter fluid, and Coleman camp fuel, or white gas). Great for stripping paint. Hard on rubber. Yes, they will clean the inside of the engine. They are not discriminatory in what they attack, however, so proceed with caution. Also, if you are adding one of these products to the oil sump, consider that the base stock of the additive is not up to the standards of the oil that BMW calls for. It will not likely have the correct viscosity, or lubricating qualities. For that reason, one approach is to change the oil, put in the additive, idle the engine, and then drain it and put fresh oil in before driving on it. Putting load on the engine with unapproved oils can do more harm than good.

Answer depends on whether you believe in it or not. Some do.
If you are referring to the injector cleaner, adding an oil to my gasoline is not on my list of things I would inflict on my own vehicle. If you are referring to the oil stabilizer, adding a non-synthetic low-tech petroleum oil to my oil sump (at ratios of 20% to 80%), is also something I would avoid. I would consider adding it to a noisy manual gearbox, which it is recommended for, as an alternative to sawdust. That's a joke, btw. I am not sure if Lucas have other products besides those two.

For what it's worth I've used AutoRx and Seafoam in my vehicles, the M3 with 128K, the 530i with 104k and the Lexus Lx450 with 140K, they are as clean as can be. Currently running Seafoam through the X5. Plus, I too believe in good gas.

BG Oil Change Service Products
I have had similar thoughts/questions regarding these types of products. I have read a number of past discussions on this board regarding products targeting fuel and oil change service. In my last three cars, all SAABs, I used BG products. Specifically, the oil change service, at 30k miles. I am about to hit 30K in my X5 this month. On one hand, based on my research on this website, I will most likely not do the BG oil change service at this time. On the other hand, I have used the Chevron fuel system cleaner every 4K miles.
