Now at 105K miles, what products to prolong engine life?
My 5year old X5 is now at 105,000 miles. I do an average of 600 motoway miiles weekly. Please can I have an idea on products that i can use to keep the engine, injectors and valve clean I am from the UK cheers cooa99 |

Just do regular oil changes every 7-10K miles with good synthetic oil and you will be fine. 105K is not high miles for a BMW, IMHO. In fact, I have 105K miles on my 03 4.6is right now too!! I would recommend changing diff and xfer case fluids now, and do the spark plugs if you have not done so - ditto with fuel filter. Other than that, just keep up with the maint and enjoy the drive!! You can run some fuel inj cleaner through every once in awhile. I used to run the Redline stuff in all my cars once an oil change, but have gotten out of that practice. I have not noticed any difference. I always run premium fuel and try to use Chevron whenever possible as it has a good additive package for this purpose.

Not sure which engine you have, but they are not usually the source of problems - as c4racer stated, keep up with routine oil and filter changes and you should be fine.
Now the trannies on the other hand...

It's not the engine, its everything bolted to it which starts the fail.
I would shorten the miles between oil changes IMO. Maybe every 5K miles to keep the viscosity high and tolerances wear and open up.

please please please do not go past 3k miles without changing your oil. thats asking for non-prolong life right there. im weird with that stuff and go every 2500. every 1500 with my bike. how i look at it is when i do change the oil on my vehicles it is broken down much more then when i poured it in so obviously the oil isnt fresh. plus fresh oil never harmed anything.

Change your oil with synthetic every 5000 miles. In between oil changes try lubromoly anti friction additives very good stuff german.

5K is fine - 3K is a little obsessive with synthetic oil.

Follow the manufacturer's recommendations, but use current oil specs (API SL or SM, not the SJ or whatever was current when the vehicle was new). That alone has a significant benefit. If the vehicle has low annual mileage, change it every 12-18 months, and don't let it sit longer than that. If you want to shorten the interval significantly, go to 10,000 miles instead of 15,000. Much more than that is just throwing money away.

if there is nothing wrong with the diff and xfer case and this would be the first time i would recommend leaving it be.
everything else racer said sounds pretty good. plugs, filters... check your hoses and belts... the car is young in age so you may be ok on the hoses.
