Sorry if im going over what some of u might already know but i thought i share some info.

Had a nice chat with SA at Brisbane BMW regarding the serving diesel engine. Diesel engines has no inspection II service like the petrol engines. Instead, according to the guildlines, every 3rd oil change extra work needs to be done which include fuel filter, micro filter and air filter. So technically I was suppose to get that all replaced during the last service last month but because the SA that looked after me this time was a newbie so he forgot to get it done for me.

Might book car in to get the rest of the stuff changed. Apparently according to the dealership, oil separator, which im guess is fuel filter, if not replaced will cause smoke in exhaust.

But still, i think I will get dealership do the extra service every 2nd oil change instead of 3rd oil change just to keep the car at optimal condition.

I check the realoem.com website but it only show the europe spec BMWs which shows EGR valve. I will need to get the dealship to double check if ERG is block in my car.

BTW, does any know when BWW started fitting DPF in their car?
And if EGR fitted on all 2nd gen diesel?

I have physically seen DPFs on 2004 3.0D here in Europe!
With regards to EGR,all X5s should have them!Have you checked the engine bay?

Really!? DPF in 2004 diesel... Shit, our 530d which is 2006 April production doesn't even have them. I was told DPF only started coming in OZ the last 2-3 years. I think it is because the emissions law in Australia is such a joke so BMW Australia probably did not bring them in till recently.

I think i might book my car in with stealership in the next few weeks. I need to get them to check EGR valve and change some of the part they forgot to replace last time. I might ask them to check MAF too while they at it. Maybe it is faulty so sending the wrong signal and suffing up fuel:air.

Cheers

Hey guys
Got the car back during the weekend after a visit with dealership regardin smoke problem.

They replaced fuel filter, microfilter and a breather. What is a breather anyway?

Other than the service, they also checked and confirm all sensors r ok. EGR value was cleaned out as they have found valve getting close to clogging up which could contribute to smoke.

They also mention that there was a fault code stored for EGR valve which might be result of my piggy back chip. Im now considering buying a Evolve tune box or a Bluefin box for my car now and ditching the piggy back module.

What do u all think? Evolve or Bluefin? I simple chose these 2 coz i can remotely tune car in Australia and also return car setting back to standard when i go back to service each time.

Cheers

Unless someone removed it and blocked the exhaust side with a gasket and bolted a new pipe straight on to you Inlet Manifold, then you will have an EGR valve before the Inlet manifold!
Remove the front black plastic cover and its right underneath.

On 2004+ 3.0D the EGR system also has a water radiator to cool down the exhaust gases before they enter the inlet manifold
I'm fairly sure my 2002 diesel doesn't have an EGR, if I put my chassis number into realoem it doesn't list it, but it does list it on later years.

Do you have a photo of the EGR system so that I can see exactly what I'm looking for?

BMW does seem to have various emission controls that aren't applied to some years of manufacture - for example, the use of swirl flaps (which are notorious for breaking and destroying engines), these are fitted to most, but not all 3.0 diesel engines - again, my year doesn't seem to have them but an equivalent year 5 series 3.0 diesel does. Go figure
