Question Will 275/40R20 tire fit on 20x10.5'' rim?

Hi everybody,

I have good deal on ASA AR1 rims (20x9 up front and 20x10.5 in the rear) for my 02 3.0 x5, but will need new tires.

315/35R20 bit expensive compare to 275/40R20

So, what do you think, will 275/40R20 tire fit on 20x10.5'' rim?

And if it will fit may it cause any troubles?

Thanks,
appreciated yours help!

look on tirerack at the specification of your specific tire. it will tell you the rim width range

thats a fair question, i dont know crap about wheels and tires, but you are right! 315x35r20 are sooooo expensive.. I think you can order non staggered? but I would like to know why the 315x35 are so expensive?

I've seen them fit before, but they did not look right. I would think its a safety issue also. go for the Toyo Proxes STIIs theyre relatively inexpensive even for the 315s

Question

Thank you guys for quick respond.

cheappc, I already got them, they are used but in good condition.

Thanks to anerbe advise I checked TR and found that most of tires has "Rim Width Range" 9-11, so they should fit ok on 10.5 rims.

But I also find out that:*for every 1/2" change in rim width, the tire's section width will correspondingly change by approximately 2/10"*

In my case, difference between fronts and rears is 1.5", so it 15mm difference in installed tires width(275/40R20 tire installed on 10,5" rim became 290).
It leads to another question: will this difference in width(same tire on different rims) change overall diameter?

its will be stretched. I have 19 x 11 wheels on my 911, 295's make it flush with the rim.

Yes, they will fit, but like some of the guys said, they will not look right.

What will happen is that the tirewalls will not sit flush with the wheel, but will be on an angle. Here is what I am talking about:

Normal:

| - Tire Sidewall
] - Wheel

Stretched:

\ - Tire Sidewall
] - Wheel

I hope this helps...

stretching will also negate any rim protection strip on the tire, making your wheel more prone to curb rash/scratches

I have 275/40 Michelin Winter tires on 315/20 rear wheels. Fits and runs fine. Does look a little " off " from 315 Diamaris

It will look mildly stretched but as far as rim protection....u need to be careful regardless with 20" wheels and curb.

Refer to your tire manuf/model for approved widths. In doubt, call your tire manuf. tech support.
