Post a photo. Of the deposits, not of you, unless you are an attractive female.

Thank you, thank you. First I'd like to thank the Academy, and of course God, and all the little people who voted for me, and...

good advice X5 Meister!!! It is if you are running short trips in cold weather. That stuff probably started out whiteish, turned reddish/brown due to rust from the cap. Lots of posts regarding this issue

I bought my 2001 X5 3.0 with 71k miles on it and it had the exact same deposits. I ran a UOA and the report came back very good, so I am not worried about it.

Same here, my 2003 had 37K when I bought it and this is exactly what my oil cap looked like. I changed the oil myself by lettting drain for an hour, ran a quart of oil through it and then filled it up with fresh BMW oil and a fresh BMW filter. I then cleaned the oil cap and used a rag to clean out what I could from the valve cover.

The above oil change occurred at 38K and I am now at 41,500, I am doing a 750mile round trip to go snowboarding this weekend and I plan to do another change after this to clean it out one more time. After that I plan to change with BMW oil every 5K miles and ignore the BMW oil condition guage.
