I did a quick search, found a few hits, but no solution.
My 2004 X5 driver side seatbelt won't retract nearly fast enough. It is now hard to get out and the buckle gets shut in the door.
I had the Dealer replace the seatbelt retractor, but it did not help.
I just pulled the cover off today and it seem the retractor is fine until it does the 90deg turn at the pillar where it comes out. If I pull it before this, it retracts fine. If I pull it out after this part (like normal when using), it won't retract well, so it appears to be friction at the slider.
My wifes X3 (2008) retracts really well, it takes as fast as you can move your hand to clear seatbelt.
So I wonder a few things. is the spring mechanism in the retractor adjustable, or can I adjust it somehow to increase the takeup force?
Does anyone know of a material I can apply to the belt to make it slide easier over the plastic return (and won't stain my clothes!)
The issue is probably related to the plastic wearing down and making too much contact with the belt as it slides by. I wonder if sanding it might help?
Thoughts? I am willing to try a few things.
