One of the posters says one way to tell if your X is going into sleep mode is by the orange light on the gearshift. They say it should turn off and stay off approximately 15 minutes after you turn of the engine. For reference, it would be the orange light next to the "P" for park if your X is parked and turned off.

Can anyone tell me if their light goes off after 15 minutes or so and stays off or if their light is on 45+ minutes after they have parked the car? Mine seems to stay on (locked or unlocked). As far as I know, I have not experienced any battery drain issues. I just replaced my battery, but it was at least 3 years old at minimum. Just trying to see if this holds any water.
search for one of my posts, i have documented from BMW that the gear indicator in some X5's does not go out, this is normal.

Searched your posts, can't find the thread you said from BMW on the gearshift light.

My 2001 X5 is in the shop now and the Tech their hasn't heard this . . .
My light is always on, battery drain issue. it went out momentaritly when he connected the radio. Radio will play when the key has been removed? Normal?

Roy

Ask your tech to check this....Maybe the Final Stage Resistor is defective.

Will do, bought in June, service records show that FSR was replaced last year.

Recommend you do not start replacing components like the FSR, but rather do a proper test for parasitic draw. It isn't the shift light, and if it was the FSR you would hear the blower fan running after you turned the key off. The radio is supposed to work without the key (it is timed). It is possibly something that you don't even use, like the telephone module. A parasitic draw test is the only way to find it.

Thx, tech is still chasing the culprit.

Initially was pointing to dash cluster module, but something else popped up, still drawing, wiper motor was replaced in 2010, all 4 window regulators since bought. Will post any progress...

Update: Problem Solved! Was Lamp Control Module. $500 for the part + 6 hrs labor . . .

And the orange shifter light goes out now, when she goes to sleep.

If it needs replacement, ONLY use OEM, the e-bay FSRs are garbage. Many here have reported failure in around a year.

Here it is:

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...y-problem.html

My shifter light stayed on for four years. Never had a flat battery, even with extended parking (4 + weeks) many times.
