Has anyone done a automatic light switch retrofit?
Sounds like a cool mod to do. I found the external switch on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-E...spagenameZWDVW

I would love to do the same thing, but as mentioned before it might be a task and a half. I would love to hear more info though.

You'll need a new rearview mirror as well, one with an ambient light sensor.

I recall member RogerKiu (?) wanting to do it, I'm not sure if he has succeeded though.

It's not as simple as just swapping out the switch. You will probably need a new light control module in addition to the aforementioned ambient light sensor. Too much trouble for a not so functional feature, if you asked me. I have the auto light switch, but I never use that feature. I always use it in manual mode. I don't want to keep buy new ballasts or HID bulbs every few years due to the constant switching ON/OFF going into/out of garages, tunnels, etc...

I tried to do the mod by swapping the light switch, but the auto-light-on function does not work. When you switch to 'auto' position, the park light and low beam go on, just like you turn it to low beam on position, and it stays on whenever you are in sunlight or in tunnel. It also gets warning in the cluster of 'light on' when you pull out the key if you keep the switch position at auto position. I compared with vehicles with auto light function and found that I have to replace my rain sensor with rain and light sensor, doing this I must replace a new windshield glass. No idea if the light control module must be replaced. NO idea either if it works even I replace both rain and light sensor and the light control module, it may need to recode the LCM or maybe some other module also need to be recoded. I gave it up already since it is too complicated.

What i would really like to do - is to have my headlights turn off when I pull my key, or within 30 sec or 60 sec. It kills me that a 2000 GMC has this feature and a 2001 BMW doesn't LOL.
One of the first things i noticed after buying the car and waiting 5 minutes in front of the car for the lights to turn off automatically LOL. I've done the xenon to halogen upgrade, so my headlights go off when i pull my key now, but the dash lights etc is still on, and i get "lights on" msg. If anyone has or does figure this mod out, let me know! |
