Angry Tailgate rattle

My rear tailgate rattles sometimes as if the door is not closed correctly the car is a 2006 model X5 . I understand that to close the door you lower it gentley and then it pulls itself in it has never been slammed to knowlege.
Any body any ideas before i book it in to the dealer under warranty

Kev

my friend, i have had the same problem on my 2006 x5, it drives me nutsssss, mine makes a squeaking noise. i took it back to the dealer and what they do is adjust your trunk doors for you, they say it will make it go away, and that if has to be done every year. after i took mine to the dealer, they adjusted the rear doors and it went away temporarily, well it goes and comes, right now it is not doing it. bottom line is you paid a lot of money for that car, take it back to the dealer and have them fix it.

Three things I did to stop the rattles were;
1. The embedded reflectors on the leading edge of the tail gate are known to bow. I used a two sided foam stick tape to hold the reflector in place.
2. I lightly scrubbed the rubber bumpers that contact the lift gate with sand paper to prevent any noise.
3. I noticed two metal wheel chocks in the spare tire hold. I put a small oil rag between them to prevent their rubbing together.
All is quiet. Good luck

I have the same problem. Right now I have felt all over the tailgate. I have an 02, and doing some research on this site, I noticed that I do not have a rubber stopper on the tailgate, next to the latch. I believe they added it from 03 up. Anyways, I ordered this rubber stopper for 1.20 from my dealer. Should be here soon. The rattle in the back of the X's is terrible. The dealerships choose to ignore this problem.

Something I found last night - while looking over the hatch I noticed that the right side of the lower "tailgate" was not latching when I closed it normally. I was having to reach over and give it an extra push to make it latch. Did not hear one rattle from the rear this morning (got some elsewhere ).

Rear Squeak

I was going nuts with my 03 X trying to find the squeak, which I was convinced was in the tailgate. Finally one day I pushed down on the cargo floor and the exact squeak happened. After pulling up the floor I think it is the culprit, to be exact, the back passenger area at the friction hold down devices. I have tried several solutions which have worked temporarily, but have not come up with a permanent one as yet. No matter how I manipulate the tailgate I have not been able to recreate the squeak, but the cargo floor will. Check it out.
