I have a e39 530d but from what I understand it uses the same radio/headunit as the X5 - it has a mk III nav with the widescreen display and 6 cd player.
Recently after getting a jump start when the battery broke, then replacing the battery twice, the stereo has never been the same. Sometimes the cd/radio will work perfectly fine and as usual, however sometimes driving over a bump or simply changing track/cd will cause all sound to cut out - no NAV navigation voice, no cd or radio, but the parking sensors will still work.
The sound will cut out for seemingly random amounts of time, however if I put the navigation on, which works perfectly but still no sound, after 30 minutes or an hour an instruction might be spoken then the sound system is working again (so nav voice, radio and stereo). It almost seems like I have to encourage the stereo to work again by setting nav instructions.
Sometimes pulling the key out and switching the ignition on and off can cause the radio that was working to just die, or for it to come on if it wasn't previously working (even if totally stationary and the car hasnt moved).
Would appreciate any advice?
