Exclamation Battery died over night

The X5 ran fine yesterday. Last night the alarm went off for no apparent reason. Went out tonight to head out to a show and the car wouldn't start. Barely got half a crank and then it all went dead. Just got home and tried it again and it's really dead now.

Two questions:

1) Do batteries die this quickly normally?

2) Is it possible to unlock the doors with the key if the battery is completely dead or should I leave it unlocked?
