You say the exhaust was cleaned! If oil went into the exhaust when turbo broke, then unless they put a new exhaust in ,you will always have oil residues in the exhaust for a while until it all blown out,no matter how they claimed to have cleaned it! The other issue is finding out why they think the turbo broke?Dealers make a common mistake in replacing the turbo without analysing why!A reason for turbo breaking is poor lubrication and this usually means thats the oil inlet pipe to the turbo has a blockage!Seen it loads of times! Good luck

A little thumb of rule:
White smoke : water in the combustion Blue smoke : oil in the combustion Black smoke : too rich! (too much gasoline vs. air) |

if i follow your rule of thumb then its not oil nor gas, its water given the smoke is really white when car is idle (just as seen on the video).

you are correct with the stealers not analyzing what caused the two blown turbos. never gave me a concrete reason why the first turbo blew, but when the brand new turbo also blew, then they started to check what really caused this and said its blockage in the intubing that lead to increase in oil pressure to the turbo. similar part to yours, but sounds opposite of what you suggested. at any case logically, either too few or too many oil in any particular moving part can lead to premature wear, that is for sure. anyway my update is after they have deblocked the intubing and installed another brand new turbo, that it still smokes. brought the vehicle back to the stealers so momentarily could not do further testing. thanks for the new angle on why the turbo blew, it seems likely that could be the cause. in general however, it could even be both coolant and oil that is leaking. lets see in the days to come. thanks Last edited by balongbalong; 06-03-2010 at 12:51 AM. |

sounds like the last owner did not change engine oil timely causing engine blowby. if oil is leaking into the combustion chamber, an engine overhaul may be needed to replace the piston rings. good luck

i have this X5 since new back in 2001, been religiously maintained at the proper check up intervals by dealers no less. like i said, they already did look inside the engine and no problems were found internally with pistons, cyclinders, etc. |
