Speakers won't fit into front doors? Well let's just...

mill the baskets!

Some of you may know about the limited space in the front doors of our X5s - not all 6.5" speakers fit. The space for the basket is about 163mm which is a little on the tight side.

The speakers I chose are the DynAudio system 240MK II which use a 1" silk dome tweeter and a 7" midbass driver with a 175mm diameter forged aluminum basket - about 15mm too large.

I am fortunate to have friends with a lot of know-how and access to the right equipment, and in this case a Bridgeport Lathe was exactly what was needed to get the job done:

Just wanted to share! Thought some of you would get a kick out of it and maybe I'd spark the idea that we don't have to limit ourselves to off the shelf solutions!

I'll be doing the install this weekend - I erred on the small side so there should be plenty of room for these bad boys!

PS - here is a before & after:

They will not work on the stock amp - DynAudio recommends 120w per channel but they really need even more... I'm running a JL Audio HD900/5 that should give 200w per channel.

If you wanted to use the stock amp there are less substantial speakers out there that would be much better suited to the lower power levels.
