It's decision time

Ok...this is a bit odd of a request but here goes. I purchased, brand new, a '04 X5 3.0 with all options except Nav. I love that car and I'm a bit attached to it as it's been perfect and the car I first brought my daughter home in in '05. Thinking I wanted to replace the 3.0 I just purchased a '06 X5 4.8is with every option, perfect condition. And one hell of a blast to drive!

While the 4.8is is great it doesn't sway me enough as a replacement from my 3.0.

I have had three offers this week that I declined because I have no interest in selling the 3.0. It's been made very clear to me, spousal wise, that I CANNOT have both.

Sheesh!

I know what most opinions are going to be but anyone's thoughts would be helpful.

Money is not the issue as I own both outright.

Thanks,

David

I know your dilemma. I bought an 05 3.0 fully loaded except for sports package and cold weather packages. Like you, I brought both kids home in that car and was very attached, thinking I'd never sell it.. I'm the original owner, others will not be in this condition. etc.

I came across a deal I could not pass up on an 03 4.4 fully loaded. At first I said to myself I'm going to keep both and talked my wife into keeping both the 3.0 and the 4.4. After starting to drive the 4.4 more regularly, I really lost interest in the 3.0's performance. You don't realize just how much it lacks compared to a V8. Now you're going a step above the 4.4 to a 4.8... I can only imagine the joy of that!

If I were in your shoes, and I think I kind of am, I'd dump the 3.0. I am now doing the just that with mine. I have lost total interest in the 3.0. The more I drive the V8, the more I love it and I think at the end of the day, it's about loving what you drive.
Keep in mind though… you don’t want to trade to a V8 and it be a piece of junk. Get it checked out in and out if you already have not done so to see what expenses you are facing. If they’re both equal or the V8 is better… let the 3.0 go to someone who will enjoy and cherish it as you do the 4.8si.
Good Luck!

2 X's? Wow, how do you guys keep up with the repairs? Seems like it would be a full time job with 2 X's.

I purchased my '04 3.0 new and have not had the issues most people report happening to them. I always keep up with maintenance and change oil more often than suggested by the manufacture. I recently replaced my expansion tank but at 111k miles I don't think that was anything significant. I have been driving my '06 4.8is for about two weeks and it is perfect too. The 4.8is has 50k on it but I'll do it's regular maintenance and hope it's as reliable as the 3.0. I purchased as a one owner vehicle from BMW of Tulsa and have verified maintenance as being completed at it's expected intervals at the same dealership since new.

Thanks for your input! I've never been so indecisive about a vehicle. I already own the 4.8is and have been driving it for about two weeks. I purchased it as a one owner, CPO, with verified maintenance having been done. No doubt its a great car.

Lucky you got to keep both of yours for awhile until you came to terms! I wish I'd get there.

Thanks again for your input

During college, I went back to talk to my 5th grade principal/basketball coach. It was one of my favorite years of my life. I cherished those moments and wanted it all over again.

His answer was "at least you had those memories. Not many people were so lucky to have them. Now go make new ones..."

I say you had your time, take some pictures, keep the memories and move on to bigger and better (4.8is) and make new ones!

Man, that was too deep... too much wine!

I think too much wine was my problem too! I finally got there today! I decided to keep the 4.8is. It rides so smooth and the power is excellent in this truck. Plus my 4 year old daughter keeps telling me "you're not selling my sports car Papa". I have to keep it at this point. I have two problems that just came up on my '04 3.0 (folding mirror/aux. fan)that I will have repaired and make perfect again and put the sign back in it.

Thanks to all respondents for going down my crazy path of indecisiveness!
