X5 Trunk lid Soft Close

Hi All, A colleague of mine just got a new 4.4i Sport, with the aluminum gauge rings etc. The one thing I really like is that his trunk lid, now has a soft close function, ie sucks itself in. Does anyone know if this can be retrofitted?

Thanks
Desmond

Mine has that function aswell. Really smart! I wasnt aware that older models didnt have soft close.
Thought it was standard across all models on the facelifts.

Welcome to the board Desmond.

The soft close function can be a PITA if it's not working properly. On occasion when I pop the gate with the remote or from the drivers seat and I don't lift the gate right away the self close activates and tries to close the gate again - but unsuccessfully. It then goes into a cycle of repeated attempts until the battery drains. I found this out when I parked the X5 at the airport and came back to a dead battery. I must have accidentally pressed the remote gate release while jostling with the luggage.

Retrofitting should work if you replace the lower gate. There may be some wiring issues though.

I like this feature too, but sometimes when I press the button on the console, it closes again when I get out of the car and shut the door. Not a big deal. I haven't experienced the same problem rayxi did - perhaps you need a slight adjustment to prevent that. Trying to keep rattles to a minimum, I usually put the trunk lid down VERY softly, and then just gently press on the rear wiper mounting point to activate the soft-close mechanism. That way I'm never slamming the trunk lid - very nice indeed.

The trunk will attempt to lock itself if you open and close the driver's door. This is a safety feature. It will do the same if you open the trunk by pressing the trunk release button. However...If you unlock the other doors and then get out of the driver's seat, the trunk will not lock itself!

I have looked extensively into retrofitting the soft close feature. It is not possible. The vehicle's 'General module' needs to be replaced along with lots of wiring and trunk motor, etc. The general module controls everything from unlocking the doors to vehicle sensors...not something you want to mess with or you will spend months trying to reprogram everything!
