Front end lower control arm bushings.....

Have the front end "clunk". Dealer quoted $600 (w/o tax) to replace both. On par for dealer pricing?

I'd look into doing it myself (not sure if I could) but I'm already fixing another car...... so I'm going to pay for this one either way.

Yes, you can diy it. Very easy job. You have to get a ball joint extractor to pull off the joint from wheel carrier.

Good to know, thanks guys.

The car I'm working on broke down 45miles away, so yeah, I have room at my house, I just don't have time to do both at the same time.....ha ha.

My dealer wanted $685 to replace them recently.
Instead I got the whole arms and bushings done elsewhere for about $450.

you can get the whole assembly from lemforder / bavauto.com and used a punch and hammer to knock out the old ball joint from where it resides and replace the whole arm. (ball joint, bushing and arm) tighten the bushing side when on the ground and torque to the proper specs. (ball joint side bolts are 60N i think and 80 for the bushing) also if you have an older style you will need an inverted torx bit to remove the old ball joint. buy new bolts if it doesn't come with.

A friend of mine and I did the same job on my 735i. It only took us a couple of hours. Used Lemforder and Meyle.

About how long (miles) can you drive with the clunk before getting into real trouble. I'm moving in two weeks and need to wait for my new garage to do this.

I know this is a very subjective question.

It really all depends on the condition of your suspension bushings and ball joints right now. If they are severely torn, immediately is recommended. If there is little cracking, a slight tear, or minimal movement in the arm, you should be good for a short time.

If you're moving in 2 weeks, you'll probably find time to get down and dirty with this car next month or so....Moving into a new place isn't usually completed within a few days.

I replaced the upper and lower arms, but mine needed replacing b/c of bad bushings; not bad ball joints as yours seems to be. B/c of this I never noticed the "clunk." My car would shake when accelerating or decelerating. It would also randomly shake if the bushing shifted while I was driving in a straight line under no load. I don't recommend this, but I drove my 735i for a month or two with the bad bushings. I don't even want to think of what would have happened if the bushing had failed while I was driving...
But then it doesn't matter much since someone hit me and totaled the car three days after I did this job!
