Wanna black out something? Plasti-Dip is awesome!

I figured I post this in case anybody else wants to stealth car parts and is worried to use plasti-dip.

I always hated the chrome trim around the kidney grills of the X. So months ago I bought a can of plasti-dip at the home depot, removed the chrome trim and gave them both 4 coats of the stuff. At first I thought I had made a big mistake... the paint went on looking sloppy. But after drying the first coat, the paint had smoothed itself out and began to look really good. After the fourth coat dried you could put the trim next to the black plastic around the wheel arches and they looked identical.
When the plasti dip dries it gets that fine granular look and feel that black plastic body parts have. Under direct sunlight it even has that same light refracting property of the black plastic where you can see rainbow colors. It looks like oil on a puddle of water but granular (I don't know if I'm expressing myself clearly here!!! )

It has been about 8 months and the plasti-dip has not chipped, faded or wore off. (my car is not garaged)
BTW this stuff is supposed to peel right off if you get tired of it... it's a win win situation.

Just a word of caution: I don't think this stuff would work well if you are masking parts with tape, I think that the plasti-dip would peel off with the tape. I could be wrong though

Good luck
Rui

your right.... it will peel off if used with tape. I've had good and back experences with plastidip. if you get a rock chip in it (even one) you have to respray since it will peal off like an orange. Awsome texture if you can get it to stick. Prep is very important with that stuff.

car is getting worked on right now (see my other recent post for the drama!)
I won't get it back until the weekend... will take some pics and try to give y'all a better idea.

BTW, the impression that I got was that, this stuff won't chip easily. It feels very sturdy. the grill gets the most abuse when it comes to road debris, I am constantly on the interstate and the trim looks just as good as the day I sprayed it! Maybe it has something to do with the amount of coats I applied, then again I could be just lucky up to this point.

If I got it right... I would skip any sanding procedure in your prep-work!
