My X5 Died on me last night. What the F!

I was driving home last night and about 5 miles in to my drive the service engine soon light comes on. So i kept driving and like 30 sec after the light went on it started running horrible. No power it felt like it was running on 4 cylinders instead of 8. So i tried to make it to a gas station but it died completly like 30sec after that and would not restart. So i called roadside and the picked it up but what the hell. Its a 2004 with 10,000 miles on it and i have never had a problem with the engine at all until this happened it was running perfect before the light service engine soon light came on.
Has this ever happened to anyone and does anyone know why this happened and what caused it.
Thanks guys.
By the way the dealer didnt even look at it yet they said there to busy until tomorow. i think thats bullshit if its an emergency they should squeeze it in.

Deja View all over again-

My roadfly post from early 2004 (2004 4.4):

It took us 600 miles before the same thing happened to us where the computer senses something, puts the car in safe overide thus downshifting to 3rd gear and then dying. It was a faulty voltage regulator the first time it happened and two weeks later after leaving the dealership it was a loose wire the second time it happened.

That's suck to hear what happened to you guys. I guess the Engine light came on that would be more serious than maintain light or oil change light. Let us know what you find out.

Sorry to hear about your problem.
One thing I hate with cars is when they die on me.I tis either the voltage regulator or the DME itself.Did you have your engine washed ?
My one cent thought is that the DME is faulty.Having owned more than 15 Bmw cars in my life, everytime something similar occured it was always the DME.Good luck.

DINAN, what was your list of mods on the X? I'm wondering if any of those played a role (though they likely didn't).

Wagner,
My only performace mods is a dinan exhaust all the other mods are cosmetic. So i dont think its that.
It just really pisses me off that this thing just died on me. I have had alot of BMWs in my past mostly M cars they have all had some problems but not even one of them ever died on my like this i was always at least able to drive it to a safe location and shut it off myself. This thing just left me stranded. And today is the second day its been at the dealer and they still dont have answers and wont give me a rental until they find out whats wrong with it and start to fix it. Its bullcrap. I was thinking maybe DME to. Electrical system was working fine. It was even cranking over just was not starting.

just a heads up. the EXACT same thing happened to me on the freeway. brought it to the dealer and they said there were no codes in the memory to read. less than 1000 miles later my tranny let go due to burnt cervos or something like that. it WAS 100% related to what ever the issue was with the stalling. dont take "nothings wrong" for an answer from the dealership. i did and $5200.00 later i have a brand new tranny at my expense.
