Rear vent not getting air through it.

(This is concerning the vent right behind the center console)

Well I've had this issue since I got the X5 but I really didn't care before I never really had people seat in the back seats. But recently, I've had people in the back and it's been cold here in NY. They have complained that it's cold in the back but me in the front, I was totally okay. So I want to fix the vent issue.

I made sure the vent is open and switch on the hot. (red)

Maybe the air vent that the air travels through to the outlet got disconnected somehow.

Does anyone know how the ventilation system works or have had this problem and fixed it.

Thanks.

do you hear any blower/wind noise when you adjust up the vent dial?

open the center console (one that flips up). The black cover can be pulled out, exposing the vent ducts. They could easily pop out of their locations. When I added an ipod charger location inside my center console, it was very easy to move around the ducts. If you don't feel any air through those, keep moving your way back.

Pic from my iphone charger install -

Blue: duct from HVAC (you should be able to feel air from this when you adjust your rear dials
Red: connection to rear registers
Missing: vertical duct I removed to set up my wiring. I tucked the wiring back and reinstalled the duct with no adverse effects.

Okay I just fixed my issue with the rear seat vents. I opened it up like what Anerbe stated above and there was alot of air coming through the vertical vent tube. But still when I held it in place, no air coming out of the outlet.

So there was a plastic mesh grill there which I pulled out and I stuck my fingers in and there was a rubber piece blocking the way. This piece opened and close but there was no switch for it (not that I know of). So I removed it and bam, air started to flow out the outlet.

Now my question is, what is this piece for because I didn't see a purpose for it. The on and off switch closes the tube from the dash, not using this piece.

Is it okay to leave it off?

Its the flapper that opens and closes to control the airflow. Underneath the entire center console is another blower motor, just like the one in the dash. I can't picture where that once came from exactly, but it sounds like you got the problem solved. Save it for the one day that you actually take the center console out for something.

See where Anerbe label'd "upper register inlet". You can see the plastic mesh. On the photo you can hardly see it bc its being cut off. But anyways, it was inside there.

But yeah, I'm going to just hold on to it. Seems like it's not a big deal.

Thanks again.

hmm...definitely a flapper door...but I couldn't find it on realoem

sounds like you can control airflow up there just fine. Can think of 3 potential reasons...

1. Reduces drafts from central HVAC when off, and/or

2. Reduces noise when you turn off the vents
