Help; Transmission problem
Okay here's what's happening. The engine runs great I'm going 60 miles per hour go to pass on the highway... step on the throttle and the engine revs to 5,000 the car actually starts to slow down... I let of the throttle and speed picks up... I then can get it gradually up to about 70 but, that is it. Here's the other situation. I am at a full stop, I tromp on the gas pedal and it just creeps along while revving at 4K to 5K rpm. I let of the throttle and I can nurse it to cruising speed. My computer has been doing weird things as of late. Is it my computer/software or is my tranny trying to tell me something bad? As in replace me. |

Sounds like the classic symptoms of slipping clutches unfortunately... which is the main concern with changing the fluid at high mileage, but inevitable in the long run anyways. It may be time to start getting prices on a rebuild/rebuilt unit from top notch tranny shops that deal with German transmissions like the ZF unit.

I have a good shop locally, Zygmount Motors, Zyggy and his dad have been working on German cars for over 50 years. I'm seein online that about $2700 with core exchange is about the market value of a remanufactured trans. how many hours of labor do you think I should expect? |

Just for the R&I it would be somewhere between 8 and 12 hours, and with the rebuild it would be more.

Thanks Weisel,
I have, what I hope is, some good news. My Indy BMW shop did a computer scan and found 2 mechanical error codes in the engine. #1) the thing in the BMW that is like the PCV valve is not working and #2) the Throttle override thinga-ma-jigger that communicates with the transmission thing that tells the trans to shift is bad. So, he said, these things needed to be fixed first. then we would know the condition and the route to take with the trans. So, I wait with my fingers crossed and a wreath of garlic around my neck (to ward off evil spirits). I'm hoping that this does the trick. I found 2 companies on line that will ship a re-manufactured trans with a 2 year warranty for $3065 and $2975 respectively. About $700 to $900 for labor at the shop of my choice. |

I would think about resetting your transmission adaptations before you go about replacing your transmission. If it is indeed your clutch packs slipping or torque converter going out, then you should experience the same symptoms after the reset. If you reset adaptations and your car starts shifting normally, you might just have had a miscommunication with the TCU or the valve body might need to be serviced.

All these things needed replacing as per the computer test. I got the car back this morning. The engine runs better but, the trans is still slipping when you step on the gas to kick the transmission down to a lower gear. It works fine in rpms 3000 and lower. What now? |

my trans didn't shift and drove with 5th gear... i don't know how but the guy who sold it to me fixed it for 400$, but i'm in Georgia, so the labor is pretty cheap over here.

Nik, Do you remember the part he fixed? I was wondering if the torque converter might be the culprit and can you replace that without replacing the whole transmission?
