I do the same, start it, put my seat belt on quick all round check - takes about 15 secs to let the oil start to circulate and then drive off.
I keep the revs and power down until it's starting to show on the temp gauge and only make use of all power if necessary once it's fully up to temp - about 10 mins. I have a 2005 X5 3.0D Sport Auto |

The rpm when you start it up is about 1k-1100rpm. I wait for about 15-30secs, until the rpm starts dropping a little. This way, there is sufficient oil pressure, and then on the go, really light on the throttle until fully warmed up.
