2005 4.4 Turbo/Super Charger Builders?

Hi All,

First of all, this is my first post... I have searched extensively for this topic within these forums but have not been able to find it.

I have a 2005 4.4 and from everything that I can find or not find, this engine model (N62B44), has no pre-built/prepackaged or previously installed options available for either a Turbo or Supercharger. Trust me, I've spent hours looking. There are superchargers available for the earlier version of the 4.4 but nothing that specifically mentions this year or engine model. As well, from what I can see, the older 4.4's carry different torque, HP and CC ratings...

Now, I can't be the first 2005 4.4 owner that's had this issue, can I???

What are our options?

1. Are there aftermarket builders that can put together what I'm looking for?

2. Are the existing Super Chargers packages from ESS or DINAN (for the older 4.4's) convertible to my engine model?

3. Same question for the Turbos?

Just another note...

1. I have already performed other performance upgrades including chips, CAI, exhaust etc. Never winter driven... Euro body kit/Custom body touches... Wheels/tires and interior stuff for my wife...

2. I am not interested in a 4.6 or a 4.8 or a new X5. My X5 is mint, low K's and paid for.

3. My budget is $10k...

Thanks all and I look forward to your wealth of knowledge being rained down on me. If there are any other 2005 4.4 owners with this issue, lend your voice!

2004 saw the introduction of the Valvetronic 4.4. Different engine, hence the different specs. I don't believe there are forced induction kits for this engine. It is unlikely that there will be kits produced now, as the engine has since been replaced by subsequent versions. If you want to call a manufacturer and ask them, try ESS.

First, welcome to X-Outpost. Hope you enjoy it here.

I've got the same setup and engine: 2006 4.4i. I've been on here a while (3 years) and have not run into any members running blown versions of the facelift 4.4i engine (i.e. 2004 and newer). So far on mine I've only done CAI, throttle body, exhausts, and Stage 3 software and strut bar.

I know Dinan doesn't offer supercharging or turboing for this model and it looks like they never will: their R&D is focused on the newer engines. I have not looked into other outfits. There must be smaller shops offering customizable setups, but I am too chicken to lay down that much $cash$ with a mom-n-pop shop that might explode my engine and not stand behind their product.

At this point I'm just going to enjoy the naturally aspirated ride and save up for the X5M.

Good luck with your quest.

The fact that the engine is valve-lift throttled rather than conventionally throttled may make it harder for the aftermarket guys. After all, it's even taken BMW a while to get around to turbocharging its Valvetronic engines.

I think the biggest issue is tuning. You could have something fabbed, but if its not tuned its not going to work right and could easily damage your motor. Find some one who can retune your factory ecu first as that is going to be your biggest issue.

A supercharger set up is going to be a lot less work than a turbo set up as far as fabbing is concerned.

Is there any chance that the new 4.4l twin turbo engines exhaust manifolds will match ours? In which we can just add all the components (given there's room) and I'm sure Dinan can write some supporting tune.

No. The ports have been swapped on the new 4.4 turbo, so that the exhaust manifold sits in the valley of the V, shortening the exhaust plumbing to reduce turbo lag. The intake manifolds are on the outside of the V. It is a completely different engine.

I haven't been on the site for a while and recently started researching this and also ran into a brick wall. I am really bummed! I am considering doing the Dinan Stage 3 software, CAI, throttle body and free flow exhaust but am thinking that for the the small gain in horsepower may not be worth the money. It sounds like you guys have these items already installed. Did you notice a difference and would you do it again if you had to do it over? Love my X and am not willing to trade it in on a newer model.

Wondering how difficult it would be to retrofit the whole (or just the certain neccessary parts of) the engine/harness/ecu to a pre-facelift spec, allowing for something like the Dinan/ESS kits. It's just a motor... it could be done, but I don't have the slightest clue on how/costs involved.

In your quests for M62 power, check out http://store.vacmotorsports.com/storefront.aspx (Enter "M62" in the search box)

Still, there's the whole tuning thing once you make the air pump under the hood work better.
