Jerking or lurching at low speeds? Should I be concerned?
2006 4.4i, 48.5K miles. (1500 left on original warranty, CPO therefater). Lately when in crawling traffic, about 5mph or so, the transmission seems to hunt or lurch. Starting to get a little more pronounced and jerky. Is there some sort of software update or correct terminology I could express to my service advisor at the dealer? BTW, my service advisor is fantastic and will help w/anything, was just wondering if I can get some intel on what it may be before going in... Thanks in advance. Joe |

If you feel that it has recently changed, and since you are under warranty, it would be reasonable to take it to your dealer, and demonstrate to them what it is doing. You should ensure that a work order is opened up, noting your issue of the transmission jerking at low speeds.
If they find something, great. If they don't, then you have it on file that the condition existed at this mileage, in case it fails later. I wouldn't worry about trying to diagnose it, just accurately describe the symptoms, whether it is better or worse when the transmission is warm or cold, etc. Yes, there may be software updates available, but we don't know if they are applicable to your specific serial number so let the dealer do their job.

Hey, search reset transmission.
you turn the key to the 2nd position, hold the gas pedal all the way down for 30-45 sec, let go and start the X. Ive read it does something, give it a try. then drive it like you stole it

Lots written on this issue. You'll be lucky if a reset will fix it, though I doubt it. Do a search and also read about "the lurch."

I had the same on mine and the simple reset did nothing to help.If yours is still under waranty ask them to do a transmision update.I had this done on mine and it made a huge difference.
It never completley solved the issue but i hardly get the lurch anymore.

I've tried to do that tranny adaptation reset thing many times and I didn't notice a thing. Someone mentioned on one post that you should hear a tick or something, but I never heard anything. There was absolutely no difference after any of the times I tried it. I've even tried driving like ass and pussy-footed immediately after the reset. and nothing... I never had this off to on gas problem before until just recently.
For me, if I accelerate abruptly from a coast... BAMMM the more gas the harder it hits. It really ticks me off because now I have to drive like a Nancy to avoid it. I've been searching for the past 2 hours but I can't seem to find anything on tranny software updates for E53's built prior to October 2003. Is there an tranny software update for 2002 4.4i?? Just changed my MAF and cleaned the throttle body hoping that would do the trick. Nope, just wasted my $$. After countless hours of reading threads, I was very confident that the MAF was the problem but I was wrong |

Im probably in that link somehwere...i posted on a tranny thread because I have had a rebuild. Sophisticated autos in general & ZF trannys are not reliable full stop! I know of others who have had their ZFs repaired on other AWD cars too...so its not just X5s. Oh and Rebuilds are sometimes not that great either...push for replacement and make sure their are no dramas with torque converter. IMO.
