Poor gas Milage?
I own an 2000 4.4 and I know that it doesn't do much Miles Per Galon, However from reading here I think mine is still wierd. When driving normal, not fast... and watching my MPG I get 12.3 MAX... Just interested that when driving without A/C on, and not pushing the GAS pedal, why do I not get more? Is it normal? I do city driving alot. but drove on Highway and still about the same... I haven't changed Fuel filter or Air Filter since I bought it, I'ts been 2 months now. and from looking at it car doesn't seem that it's been taken good care of... |

City driving on the window sticker states 15mpg, so its not far off. Fuel Filter 100K, air filter as needed, if its dirty and sandy you should change it, if its clean, then it's prolly ok for a while. I think I get like around 12mpg some days...I don't care I drive 7 miles to work each day.

Are you relying on the on-board fuel consumption computer, or are you filling the tank and calculating it from gallons and miles driven, preferably over several tanks?
Turning off the air conditioning will have a minimal impact, and if you open the windows to get fresh air it may be worse. If you are not seeing a difference between city and highway it is most likely your driving style.

I was getting around 11 mpg with mostly city driving with some freeway. Also no matter how I drove it was the same. I replaced my alternator and had the battery disconnected for several hours. Two tank fill ups since and I am getting almost 14 mpg now. Must of reset the ECU and modules. So you could start there.
I would check the air filter and maybe you are due for new spark plugs.

Yes, I am relying on the on-board fuel consumption computer. and like Redline said: no matter how I drive, I still get the same. About the A/C I thought it had huge difference in MPG. I'll try spark plugs, I think I am due on that.
Thanks. Also nothing has to do with this, but I found unplugged wire on the floor by the gas Pedal. It has a plastic Head. Sorry I am at work so I don't have any pics right now. Any Ideas on what it could be?
