I've been chasing a problem in my steering column that my 8 yr old says sound like a cat meowing whenever I turn the wheel left or right at slower speeds. Dealer's replaced the upper steering column bearing (just under the steering wheel) and the sound went away for maybe a week. This second time they "lubed" the column bearing, but that didn't do anything. So back it goes for it's third attempt to fix.

And FWIW, my '97 528 had to have it's upper steering column bearing replaced at 105,000 miles because it started to sound like there was sand in the column when turning the wheel.

The same thing was occurring with my 06 4.8is. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the steering rack. Initially, per BMW bulletin they are suppose to try the grease method. If that does not resolve the issue, then they have to replace the steering rack. Shortly after that I had the dealership pretty much replaced the front end suspension. First, the air ride module went bad then everything else follow suit. They replaced both front air bags, control arms and struts. In addition, they also rebalanced my wheels at no charge. Now, the x drives like a dream. The steering wheel is light and responsive. Thank you for warranty/cpo. However, since my last service the tire monitor light keep on coming on. I spoke with my SA and he said I may need to have the sensors replaced. I personally spoke with the dealership shop manager, the grease method is really only a temporary solution; the sound will more than likely return. Good luck to all.

what i think is wrong with my x5 is,,after doing little more tests,
inside cab nothing is moving,i put my dear wife to turn left/right the steering wheel and me i put my hands on the steering shaft to see if any movement up and down when turning, but was none!,
then i did the same test under the hood, and when i put my hands on the double joint and go up and down i can see little movement ,not much but is there and my wife said that she was feel it to the steering wheel when i was going up and down,,
so i think my problem is probably at the lower joint assembly.
can someone confirm if is there a bearing in there that can be changed?

thanks!
