Sticking it to the man

Okay, so I have an 03 4.4 X5 with 92k on it and a 100k extended warranty. Rear airride system has been replaced along with the compressor and lots of other maintainance, this ESP has been great to me, i bought it from an infinity dealership.

So I'm trying to stick it to the man one last time by getting future maintainance done now for free, before the nice guys at the dealership turn into the stealerships minons.

I've done a lot of searching and have found different answers about AT fluid changes, and some other stuff, but nothing definitive. Belts/Plugs/brakes are all things to consider. I plan on giving the car to my son, a true bmw fanatic, in the future and want to get stuff out of the way so its ready for its next 100k.

I just need a list to bring to them of things that are "worn out"

To the OP:
Have you done any looking here, via the Search Tab?
There are several threads on "what goes wrong", "what
to fix", etc.

No trying to be an idiot, especially, but a few random posters
that respond to you with their anecdotes here, will be much less
than the various laundry lists you will find in those searched threads, imo.

You say that you have extended warranty, but don't mention if you have extended maintenance. Two different things.

Extended maintenance would cover wear items, and you could get anything done that the service book calls for, as well as items that are worn beyond a servicable level. It would include things like brake pads, wiper blades, filters, gaskets, etc.

I think it is more likely that you have extended warranty, not extended maintenance, and in that case all that is usually covered are things that have already failed. Strictly speaking, warranty doesn't cover normal wear and tear, it covers defects in materials and workmanship. They don't replace items that might fail in the future. You could get an inspection done to develop your repair item shopping list, but if you don't have symptoms of failed components you are unlikely to get very far.

I would get an oil service done, ask them to look around underneath the vehicle, and particularly look at the CV boots, as well as for any leaks in engine/cooling system/differentials/transfer case/transmission.

If you do have extended maintenance, and they will cover everything, great. Ask them to jack up the radiator cap and drive a new X5 under it.

I do in fact have extended maintance

Now I'm scrambling to get my short list together at 94k

and as far as a detailed list like you get with most cars for scheduled maintaince one doesn't exist for the X. I've checked my books, and the internet high and low, its kind of ridiculous if you ask me...

Certainly the list exists. Your dealer has it, and uses it when they do services. There are three services for your X5, known as oil service (which includes the oil filter, and some checks); Inspection I, and Inspection II. The oil service happens every 15,000 miles, Inspection I happens at 30,000 miles, and Inspection II happens at 60,000 miles. The cycle then repeats. Some owners do additional oil changes between the scheduled services. The required services can be done earlier or later based on the lights on your dashboard that call for service. So, what BMW will pay for at this point is not based on the time to your maintenance plan contract expiry, but rather how long since they did the last service. You may be due for an oil service, or an inspection, at this point. If you are due for neither, you don't get one.

Beyond the list in that link, you should bring to the attention of the service advisory anything that is not functioning correctly. That's it. You don't get future maintenance, but rather you get currently required maintenance. You want to catch anything that is broken now, but you can't claim for things that won't wear out until next year, for example. If the brakes are down to the service indicator, they would be covered. If they are only 80% worn out they won't be covered. You also won't get BMW to pay for items that they don't recommend, like transmission fluid (unless your year of vehicle called for it to be changed).

J</SPAN>CL is spot on, as usual...
Taking your X in for "preventative measures/future situs, seldom works.
If you haven't had the brake fluid changed in a couple years,
ask for it. Coolant might be due, too. Have brake pads/rotors
looked at, as mentioned.

All depends on the SA's 'tude, your maintenance coverage, etc.
