Service Engine Soon on 06 X5 3.0 50k miles

Yesterday SES light popped up .I have filled the gas couple of days earlier.I even added Techron fuel system cleaner to the tank.

I have checked whether the gas cap is loose as I found this might be an issue .The light is still on.

Please help me out to correct this issue.

Thanks for looking

If it was the gas cap being loose, it should go away shortly.
But how does it run? Is there a rough idle, sputtering, etc?
It can be a number of things. best thing is to run to autozone and they will scan the SES code for you.

Thanks

The fuel cap is tight. There is no difference in the ride .But I could see a difference in MPG.MPG reduced 20-30% after this signal.

I took it to the dealer .They asked me to schedule an appointment.
Is it required to go for an appointment?

Thanks

I highly recommend that you check the codes before you take your X5 in for service. You can buy a code reader for about $100, at www.AdvanceAuto.com caries the Actron code reader it looks like this:

If Advance Auto is not available in your area then try www.autozone.com

This code reader will allow you to read codes and reset them as well. It is vitally important to know the fault code before you let the stealer (dealer) diagnose your X5.
Sometimes, there are hick-ups in the X5 system and it sends a code for no reason. You may want to reset it and see if it returns, sometimes a code will not return after its been reset.

I had a similar situation, I read the codes, reset them and never came back. Things happen.

It is required to have the codes read to determine what the light on the dash is indicating as a problem. That can either be at a dealer, or at an independent shop that has the appropriate tools. If you are using the dealer for your service, they are fine.

You should ask them to diagnose it and give you an estimate before starting any significant work. Once they have diagnosed it, you can decide what to do next.
