2001 X5 Thermostat help

I'm getting the typical signs of needing to replace the thermostat. It appears to be stuck open, not allowing my X5 to heat up...not good in Maine as we approach December. I have ordered a new thermostat and figure it can't be that hard to replace. Is there anything I need to know before approaching this task? Anything I need to do first, other than drain the coolant? Does anybody have a step-by-step process for me...please.

I was really lucky this time. All I had to do to fix the 'no heat in Chicago winter' was to add some anti-freeze liquid.
After filling up the radiator my X5 started to blow a nice hot air. No need to change the thermostat yet.

It continues to be a wonderment to me as to whereinthehell the coolant liq "goes to" in Xs and many other BMWs...I'm back to topping up 6-8 oz of mix after every 1500 "trip".

My 18 year old Honda Hurricane 1000, with a coolant capacity of a <couple of qts., has not used a drop of coolant in 45k+ hard miles over that 18 years.

I was pulling out of a wine store parking lot today and a modded and fine azz 545 is sitting there with the hood up and the guy looking at a steaming radiator. He hollered that he had help coming and that "the sumbitch eats coolant". I said, "I heard that".

My X has "passed" three pressure tests, a new water pump, (under warr.), and gallons of added coolant mix over its 49K...BeamER must be doing something less than they need to, with cooling systems, imo.
Ramble over. BR,md

That's really odd, md, because mine has never lost a drop in over 80K miles

FWIW, I just dumped another pint of ATF which brought it to the high mark....
Did the same back in spring of this year and did top off in mid summer also.

I'm in the same boat and I've decided to get the system pressure/sniffer tested.
Somethings gotta be off.
