You will have a bad driving time in CT winter for 20".
This is not a bad set and great for Connecticut winter -

those 17's will not clear the brakes on the 4.8is!

to the op: get either all-season tires or go with a winter set-up. 18's or 19's work well on the 4.8is. ( I run 19's) and I've only run on Pirelli Scorpions Ice & Snows. I've had great results and have left a ton of other cars stuck in the snow!

Craigslist ad for a set that might work for you.

set of bmw x5 rims and snow tires

From the pictures he emailed me the rims are Style 99.

(Not my ad. I had contacted the seller to see if the rims would work on my e70. I'm not interested in having the rims bored out to clear my hubs so...)

Tirerack wheels/tires setup

Listen: go to the TireRack.com and plug in your vehicle. You can hit the wheel/tire combo and see what they look like on your vehicle. They match them to your particular vehicle. It's rather cool. Try it.

Went with Pirelli Scorpions - dedicated snow/winter tires in stock 20" sizes for the 4.8is. I swear by them, last winter had huge amounts of snow and I was able to climb steep hills from a dead stop that were not plowed with no issues. I don't buy the whole you have to have narrower tires or 19's, the Pirelli's I have on the stock 4.8is rims rock and roll through all the snow. No problems.

EDIT: Also, I refuse to give up the full stout look (20's with 275s front and 315s rear) with filled wheel wells by going to a smaller, narrower tire. Even if it's only for 3-4 months, I wouldn't want to drive it looking that way although I've seen lots of owners in Europe and Canada do this. I really like the way it looks with the wider tires on the 20" stock rims.

ditto that. I run 265-50-19's on some 19x8.5" rims and they are just wide enough not to look silly with the is flares, yet they still work excellent in the snow. The bigger sidewall helps. These tires are about 1/3-1/2" taller than stock but since same front and back they work perfectly. No issues driving in ridiculous snow up in the CA Sierra's.

And if you want to go with 18's, I have a set of OEM X3 sport package 18's available from a 2008 that were only used for 1 year and look brand new. they will clear the 4.8is brakes, but you will need to rebalance with outside weights instead of where the factory puts them. I will sell them for $450 plus shipping from CA if anyone is interested. PM me for pics. then you can go with the stock non sport 18" tire size which I think is a 255-55-18. That is a pretty ideal snow tire size, IMHO.
