Trans Failsafe when wet

Some details of my issue and a question for help. Got the dreaded fail safe and service engine light a few days ago during a really heavy rain (2003 3.0 X5). I've read the many posts and saw some traced it down to a wet connection or wet trans ECU box, so thought that might be a possible culprit. After resetting the light with the gas peddle, the light came right back on and the car would drive in all gears, but had the very hard 2-1 down shift and harder than normal upshifts. It was still raining at the time.

After letting it sit two days with dry weather as I pondered my options, I reset it again and it drove fine, no lights, no hard downshifts.

So, my question is where exactly should I be looking to "seal up" as various previous posts have alluded to? I took off the plastic cover near the firewall in the engine compartment, but not sure from the posts where exactly I should be looking and sealing. Any details on this would be much appreciated. (I also verified the alternator voltage and the battery is quite new) -dp

ps First post here, but the information I've gleamed from the posts have helped me tremendously (Final Stage Resistor, oil changes, etc.)
