4.4 engine starting problem

Hey guys, I've been absent from the boards for a while, enjoying my new Triumph Daytona 675 and it seems my X5's feelings are hurt.

When starting the engine, it turns over no problem, but it makes a strange noise as though the starter continues "cranking" for a second or two after the engine has started. I don't know of a way to explain it other than there is an extended noise once the engine turns over and starts running.

I cannot descern where the noise is actually coming from, its kind of a squeal and kind of a grind noise, I know that description is not very helpful. At times, I wonder if its a belt slipping, but other times, it definitely sounds more mechanical. If the the engine starts every time and there are no errors on the dash, will the dealer be able to read any codes? I'm thinking about finding an independent mechanic now that my warranty is up because I was never really impressed with the dealership to begin with.

The vehicle has been well maintained, just over 50,000 miles (2003 model year 4.4i) and of course, the CPO warranty expired less than 30 days ago. I did recently have a failed alternator that was replaced approx 2-3 months ago along with the battery.

Any thoughts?

Weasel will become famous soon enough
If you suspect the starter gear is staying engaged for an extra couple seconds, but want to make sure it's not the belt... just pull the belt off and try it out. And since the CPO just expired, they would most likely be able to help you out if it is the starter.

My 03 X5 4.4i is starting to do the same. Did you figure out it was the starter?
