What THE is this?!?!

What THE is this?!?

hi everyone!

i have a problem. my car is making an awful sound now.
at first it started out sounding like a new belt was needed. then 2 weeks later i started to hear a knocking sound when i would start up the car. but once the car was warmed up it would go away.

well, NOT anymore. the knocking sound is MUCH louder now and you really hear it when stopped at a light. quite embarrassing actually b/c you hear the whistling sound AND knocking.

at first i thought i needed a new belt but now i don't think so.

i have an appt to drop off my car on Wed but i wanted to walk in there with a little bit of knowledge since my warranty has expired.

the knocking is definitely coming from the front.

here's the video:

i wanted to get advice here b/c this site ROCKS!
when i did a search i found various issues such as timing belt, belt tensioners, etc. so i wanted to see if someone here can diagnose my issue?

i just hate walking into a shop and looking like a deer in the headlights.

hey Mari,

That sounds bad... Tough to diagnose based on video sounds, have you noticed if your engine temp is getting hotter with the latest issues? The knocking sound is more concerning...

could be water pump or belt tensioner. it also sounds also like the fan is hitting the shroud. Does the sound vary with the speed of the motor?

Let us know what the outcome is. Hopefully not too serious.

Hope all is well, Mari!!

oh no! that's what tijanaw said when i sent him the link.

the car is not overheating (thank God) and has been making that awful sound for a short time now, but it's definitely really bad now and loud.

btw- i hope you and your family are well. )

It's really bad when stopped but hardly noticeable while driving.

Hi Mari,
I agree on possible water pump, or fan and/or belt pulley hub(s)...
weird because I could not see the fan rotating in that vid,
but it sounded a lil' like the fan hitting the shroud, too.
A good collection of crickets in there, too.
GL on repair; maybe an Indie vs dlr?
Hope you, D and your daughter are all doing fine!

sounds like the fan is hitting something plastic, like the intake boot or something else. take a reall good look. car off and check if there is enough clearance. that squeeling sound could be the alternator, check your voltage
