A/C question

hi

does the ac compressor cycle on and off (when in use) as in cars without climate control??

or does it stay on all the time and adjusts temp up or down by adding / subtracting hot air to control temp ???

i have a 2005 3.0d and to me it seems as if it just stays on all the time, i could be wrong i havent actually stood outside the car and listened

i dont have a problem, just curious, i,m assuming that the ac system is going to be the same across the different engine combinations
