Given his handle I am going to assume he has a 2006 model X5. It is my understanding, starting with the 2002 model X5, BMW added a separate gas cap light to the instrument cluster.

It is a 2006 X5 3.0 and I am not aware of a gas cap light? I will have to look in the O. M. in the glove box...

I know that I asked her if the gas cap was on tight and she said it was...I will check when I get home...I will see if I can get it by auto zone one day if the code doesnt clear soon or if it comes back on. Time is a luxury I don't have...almost wish the thing would break down...then I would call BMW have them pick it up and bring a loaner down.

I own a business and have two offices...and I have a 1 and 3 year old...between DR's apts, birthday parties, work...and work I don't know how I have time to do anything...

Thanks for everyones advice...

Ok so I checked the gas cap and it seemed tight. I took it out and put it back in and I guess I will give it a few days and see what happens. If I get a chance to go to autozone I will get them to scan it for me.

Thanks for the help.

OK went to auto zone and they scanned a P1419 code. I have searched and found that this is a 2 air flow sensor?

How do I replace? And any idea how much they are. Or should I just take it in and pay my $50 for cpo warranty.

Thanks!

Secondary air flow sensor. This is not the mass airflow sensor.

It is definitely more than $50 just for the part, so get it fixed under your CPO warranty.

My research shows it is the Secondary Mass Air Flow sensor. Part number 11-72-1-438-814. This is not to be confused with the Mass Air Flow sensor. Here is an illustration from realoem.com:

RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0i EMISSION CONTROL-AIR PUMP

Line item 9.

The other reason to take it in for a warranty claim is that it is not certain that replacing the sensor will resolve the problem. It could equally be caused by the engine wiring harness, and a failure in the circuit that connects to this sensor.

Guys thanks for all of the advice. Well I can use a little time off of work anyway. I guess I will call and set something up with the dealer. Just wondering (I am going to get this fixed) but can I do any harm to the engine driving it until I get it there say for a few days while they are trying to get me in?

Thanks.

i'm not an expert, but i'd go ahead and say no. These cars are so technologically advanced that if something were to go seriously wrong, you'd go into engine failsafe mode and it'd shut you down...

No, all that will happen is that you will have higher exhaust emissions (and the nuisance light on the dash) until it is repaired.
