2005/2006 X5 vs. 2007/2008 X3 - which would you prefer?

Hey guys,
New to this site, and hopefully new to the BMW world soon. I was very close to buying a 06 X5 3.0 fully loaded for $22k, 19 months left on the warranty...but the seller bailed on me (out of state purchase, bought a ticket and everything to fly out there, and then tells me he sold it to someone else...anyways)

So after that I started looking into X3s, and now am having some trouble deciding between a newer car with fewer miles (have found plenty of 07s, a few 08s with nice enough features and around 20-40k for $22k).

Right now I'm looking at an 05 X5 4.4 that is loaded with everything I've been looking for. A few months left on the warranty. Also going for $22k.

-----
I'm looking to buy a bad ass SUV to impress. I've had a car for a few years but after breaking things off with my ex of 9 yrs, for once I want something impractical and nice I've had my eyes set on an X5 for a couple of months now, but now the X3 doesn't look so bad (which is my practical side talking, lol)

Thanks! (sorry for such a long first post)

Since someone is going say it anyways, I'm going to say it for them: Why not a 4.8is?

show me a fully loaded black on black 2005+ 4.8is for $22,000 (with BMW warranty and ideally less than 60k miles, less than 70 tops)

Well, I was concentrating on this part:

I assumed you would realize there would be a price difference but I've seen 4.8s going for approx $25K. Not much difference to me there!

2004 BMW X5 4.8IS - Kelley Blue Book

Life's about compromises. You'll have to decide if you can accept that, at that price, the 4.8 will be higher mileage and probably w/o warranty (not anything to really speak of that is).

Another option, of course, is a 4.6!

Good Luck!

Oh, and another thing. With the 4.6/4.8 you won't have to worry about the fully loaded part.

I have 22k to spend, not a penny more. Now in a few years, it will be a much different story lol. I did find an 04 4.8 (red) that looked pretty bad ass, but whether I get a 3.0 or 4.4 doesn't matter too much to me (I'd take an 06 3.0 vs. 05 4.4 with all the same features)

Right now I'm leaning towards this 05 as there isn't anything else that matches what I'm looking for out there. I search autotrader, cars.com, craigslist (every state), ebay, etc 2-3 times a day.

I like the look of the 07+ X3s, but they don't seem to have as nice of options (but they have a lot less miles and longer warranties)

No matter which vehicle you end up with you'll be spending more LATER. If the mod bug hits you, then it will be SOONER!

I'm sure you'll enjoy whichever you get.

Oh I know, I've already looked into some little things, but I'm sure it will get worse, lol. That's why I need a warranty....so I can reason with myself 'other' purchases

You want a badass SUV, but the practicality of having warranty and for less money. This my friend, does not make you badass Plus, women really don't give a shit what you drive, other dudes do.

Now for a real answer...my friend has a 2006 X5 3.0, I have a 2007 X3 3.0si. I have every option except NAV and the 19" MSport wheels, he has a basic 3.0.

He actually prefers my vehicle due to having the entire body color, which looks much nicer. It is 700 lbs lighter so it uses less fuel, handles better, and it just slightly smaller. The cargo area is actually bigger I think. The X3 is basically a tall 3-series wagon, the X5 is more of a truck and a rattle trap due to the 2-piece rear door and tailgate.

Mine is a year newer and has another year more warranty. Both vehicles cost us the same amount of money. I am not sure where you live, but you should be able to find some nice versions of both in the southwest.

Neither of them are badass...if you are looking for that, rip off your sleeves, grow a mullet, get a Harley. At least that is what everyone around here does when they want to look badass. It is also impractical, which is also what you asked for. Really, a Corvette would do the same thing and uses the same haircut.

2007 X3 3.0si M-Sport (18" wheels, larger ones with chrome might make it badass)

2006 X5 3.0

hey now, you don't need a mullet to drive a Corvette. Most vette owners don't have much hair left as a matter of fact :-) which is why they sell so many AT's. Which is just wrong btw....

Anyway - X3 is a chick car if you ask me. I'm just saying!!

4.6 / 4.8is are the only bad-ass SUV's in the range of what you are considering. But you won't find one with a warrantee anywhere near your price range, and it will prove very costly to own if you cannot perform repairs and maint. yourself, and even still the consumabes - tires, brakes - are pretty expensive anyway.

If you want bad-ass get a H2 hummer!! Drive right over those Prius owners giving you the evil eye....

Two very different cars. The X3 would be too small for our family requirements and wouldn't be practical when towing a 2Ton boat. So the X5 was an obvious choice. You need to determine exactly what you want to use the car for.

Personally i think the X5 is a nicer looking car than the X3 but again thats purely personal taste.
