burning oil?

I have an X5 2002 with 71,000 miles I changed my oil 1,000 miles ago with Synthetic mobile one and 1,000 miles later it says check oil level??? I looked and it seems low whats going on does my car have a bad engine or is it normal to burn oil so quick?

1Qt of oil consumption in 750 miles is the max within BMW specifications. Couple of questions:

1. 3.0 or 4.4?
2. Did you change the oil yourself?

If you have a 3.0, shops have been know to perform the 7Qt oil changes when requirement is 7.9Qt. Just something I've seen.

Did you check the level right after the oil change? The oil sensor is very sensitive so if the oil level was just a little bit low when the oil was changed a slight difference could explain the warning message. Is it a 4.4 of 3.0?

I would top off the oil level, note down your current miles and monitor the level for the next 750 miles. Make sure that there are no oil leaks also.

So I guess I lost 1 qt? I just kept checking over and over to be sure it is right alittle over the min line but it covers the min seems it reaches to the min line but i remember seeing it was in the middle between min and max when oil was changed how much oil is gone? The light didnt come on right now does that mean it will be back on later?

Check the oil level dipstick and see if it is within the right range. Wait for 5mns after having stopped the engine before checking the oil level. If the level is ok don't worry. As I said the oil sensor is very sensitive. I got this oil warning message from time to time on mine. Interestingly enough it stopped happening after I lowered the oil level.

by the way let me know if this is normal or is this a really bad sign?? I drive a lot of highway miles and some street sometimes agressive. Should I maybe order red line oil for next oil change or stick to same oil?
