Service Engine Soon Light comes on after filling up?

I have searched around and have seen a few post but if the experts can point me in the right direction...not looking forward to having to take the car to the dealer...(it is covered under CPO warranty but closest dealer is 1 1/2 hrs away)

Here is exactly what has happened twice now...

1st time... I filled the car up premium gas...from a gas station I use all of the time...the next day wifey starts car and the service engine soon light comes on (not service indicator) and stays on will not shut off, cut car off and restarted same thing...so check oil, fluids, gas cap...OK car seems to run fine. I have had it serviced about 3k miles ago too service indicator light is still good. Call BMW Dealership and ask them what it could be...lady I talked to said it could have to do with the gas but if the car ran fine see if the code goes off by itself. She said it could take driving it 7 - 10 times 15 miles or more? OK...wife drives the car and sure enough day 5 light shuts off...GREAT!

So a few days go by and yesterday the wife fills up the car at another gas station and today guess what the light comes back on... I asked her if the car did anything weird when it came on and she said it did not, put the gas cap on...YES. I am not sure if I should just see if the code goes off again or take it in...

Any and All help and suggestions are appreciated!

Are you keeping the engine running while filling up the gas tank? If so, that can trigger the SES light to come on.

It would also be helpful to know what the diagnostic code is. Could be totally coincidental to your filling the vehicle with gas and no way to know without knowing the error code.

No... I am not leaving the engine running while filling up...(my wife isn't either)
It could be a coincidence that it only happens when gas is put in. Is there away to shut reset the light with out the code scanner. Or is the only option...dealer, AutoZone or something?

Thanks for your help...

You cannot clear the codes yourself without having a code scanner.

That is what I figured...

Well I guess I will see if the code clears itself the next couple of days or go by autozone...Is it possible the seal for the gas cap seal is failing? I may take a look at it and make sure the cap is tight...

It's likely that your wife is just not tightening the gas cap enough. A loose cap will trigger the SES.

There is an air pump that keeps a low pressure in the gas tank, so that a related sensor can tell if the pressure drops (like when the gas cap is left loose). Since it seems to happen when you remove the cap, the air pump and sensor are also possible causes of the SES light. Either one could be failing, and when you replace the gas cap they could take a while to rebuild the correct pressure (even if the cap is replaced properly)

Reading the codes (and not just clearing them) will point you in the right direction.

Go to Autozone and use their scanner to find out what code is being set. Then maybe we can help you with the diagnosis.
