FYI, I finally found the location of the engine number, required to be witnessed by local roads authority to register the vehicle. (VicRoads, Australia)
If you need to find it, take off the engine cover, air intake piece that sits on the radiator, and MAF to Throttle body hose, and look underneath the throttle body, between the two metal water pipes. With a torch, you can just make out the numbers without removing the throttle body.
Hope that helps and saves some frustration.
(I believe on later V8s the number could be on the side of the block rather than in the valley as here)
Cheers,
Scott.
