how heavy is your steering

hi sorry if this has been discussed before.

i have staggered 19 inch rims, 255 fronts and 285 rears, ive considered lowering my x a little 30mm max and getting wider wheels.

all this for the cosmetic looks, as i am more that happy with the handling and ride quality.

i thought 20 inch rims 10,s in the front and 11,s in the rear.

so my question is, have any of you done the same, how much heavier did the steering get going to 285,s in the front.

i already consider the steering with 255,s quite heavy, not annoying but still heavier than i have experienced, so do 285,s make much difference?????

do you think the wider wheels would add to shortening component life in the front end.

maybe i should stick with 9,s and 10,s (20") but with less offset, so as to fill out the guards

what is your experience??? (oh 2005 3.0d sport)

Ewen

as anyone done this and did they notice a difference in the energy required to turn the steering wheel

A little, (315 series) but you get used to the feel.

You cant compare the 4.6is to a 4.4i as the 4.6 has servotronic. The steering will be light even wth 315's on the front with the 4.6is. Even the 3.0 with 225's has drastically heavier steering than the 4.6.

My 4.4i went from 255s to 275s on the front. Yes, the steering got a little heaver (I'd guess like 20-30%). But I love the feel even more than before.

hence the question, i guess the 3 litre diesel engine although still a 6 cylinder is going to be heavier than the 3 litre petrol, and i already find the steering heavy with 255,s

if i do anything i think i will stick with 9 inch rims up front and 255 tyres

im not keen on the idea of making the steering any heavier

thanks

oh?

Thanks for the info. I have not driven another E53 and thus have no comparison. In light of that news, I imagine 285 series would be a heavy feel. But, it comes down to individual preference.
