E53 Rear window heater and photochromic mirror replacement

Hi, would anyone be able to advise me on the rear heater of my X5 please. The driver's mirror is working, passenger door mirror is not working and the rear windonw heater is not working. I assume that the passenger door mirror is not functioning therefore this may be affecting the rear screen - could this be the case(?) - if it is on the same circuit.

I do need to replace the passenger mirror and it is a photochromic glass which looks as though it has leaked and now looks awful. Any ideas where I could get the mirror replaced and also a solution to the rear screen heater.

Any help would be appreciated.

My car has done 157,000 miles. I have in the last 18months had the following work done:
  1. Rear brake discs
  2. Turbo
  3. Fuel injectors
  4. Rear bushes
  5. Gearbox recon
  6. Laser alignment of camber and wheel
Drives like a dream.

Well, the mirror itself isn't hard to change... but it costs way too much for a piece of glass because of the electrochromatic fluid... $700+ at the dealer if I remember right. I'd check scrapyards for wrecked X5's to source one. To replace it it just pops off in the upward direction, you should see how to remove/install it when you look at the back of the new one.

As for the heated glass, I'd check to make sure it is getting power to it when turned on before condemning the glass, those almost never go out. It is likely a fuse or other simple issue.

Rear Window heater

Many thanks for the swift response. Please wlould you advise where the fuse is located and the number - have googled but not been able to find a diagram of the fuses. Have checked all 30Amp fuses in the trunk and they are all intact.

Please would you let me know how to check the power on the rear screen as I am not sure how to do that?

Many thanks.

I'd have to look it up at work with all the info on your vehicle to get the fuse location and number, but there should be a fuse chart in there somewhere to help you find it. As for checking the power to the screen, it would take a multimeter to the power leads to the windshield's heater grid.

Multimeter

Thanks again - I have had the car for nearly 6 years and I have not had a chart for the fuses - it would be extremely helpful if you have one.

AS to the multimeter - do I literally touch the probes on the element to ascertain the electricity?
